Back in the 70's & 80's, I saw he Mirror Lake Inn, across that charming little lake, & always hoped to be able to come & stay there sometime. Long I waited - but it just didn't happen. Finally, in 1990, a NYS Planning Federation was scheduled for Lake Placid (I was a Board Member), & I got to fill another cancelled reservation. However, the Hilton, built for the Olympics, was filled to capacity- no room for me there. The reservation Lady offered to help find private quarters, but reported that she was "sorry" - the only room available was at The Mirror Lake Inn- "Would I be willing to stay there?" Well- I guess you know my feelings! I was thrilled ! It was like Brer Rabbit in "Song of the South", who when the bear chased him, said. "You can put me anywhere, but PLEASE, don' put me in dat briar patch!" I was in the newer section of the Inn but it was warm & inviting- & decorated beautifully. Meetings were held during the day, but at night we were at organized dinners where "typical banquet food" was served. When the wives of the members found I was at The Mirror Lake Inn, they turned green with envy, & had all kinds of questions for me.They complained about the Hilton- the walls were too thin (noise), it was tacky, & the toast was cold by the time it got to the butter table. Meanwhile, I breakfasted in a room & manner never to be forgotten - a long garden-like room lined with high old-fashioned windows overlooking the lake & filled with pots of still-blooming geraniums (October), a dusty rose fan-shaped linen napkin, tucked in my large juice goblet, & a cheerful waitress, who poured my juice & pointed out the vast & delicious buffet, to which I was welcome.Several kinds of juice, cold & warm cereals, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, and Belgian Waffles (which I love!), & much much more! I was told that Mirror Lake Inn had just won a "Best Taste Award" & been written up in one of the gourmet magazines. (I believe it was for the Waffles, & they deserved it!). My breakfasts there were like being in heaven- I didn't want to leave, & after 3 days it was over, but it was the dream of a lifetime. I've always hoped to go back- maybe this is my chance. Thanks very much for your Inn, for the memories, & for this clever & unusual contest.
