| Christmas Magic By: Anne R. Millport, NY |
| Thirteen years ago, when my husband and I first started dating, he took me away for a long weekend. It was just before Christmas. I was so excited to be going somewhere unknown with my new love, and as we climbed higher and higher, and the snow started falling, I found myself feeling very peaceful and calm. When finally we drove into Lake Placid, it was getting dark. We drive thru the pretty little town and finally, after a 5 hour drive, pull up in front of the Mirror Lake Inn. I remember catching my breath; it was just absolutely magical. The lights twinkled and shone against the flurries falling in the dusk. When we stepped inside, I smelled the wonderful aroma that I still can't quite put my finger on--and saw all of the gleaming woodwork and lovely tasteful lodge decor, wood burning fireplaces, beautifully decorated Christmas trees, poinsettia's and fresh greenery. It was spectacular. Our room was equally beautiful, and the view from our balcony awe-inspiring. I never wanted to leave! I was always a kid that loved Christmas-time, but as I got older, it became harder and harder to conjure up the magic of the season. In Mirror Lake, it all came rushing back. The food, the accomodations, getting bundled up and walking thru town, the old-style movie theatre, the quaint shops; it all added up to my most special Christmas. This past Christmas, 13 years older with 2 children, we came back. I was afraid to expect too much; having such wonderful memories. As we drove through the pretty town, and I saw the twinkling, shining lights of the Mirror Lake Inn at dusk, I saw that the magic was just as I had left it. |
