My trip years ago to Mirror Lake Inn turned out to be so picture perfect it seems like it was just days ago!
The year was 1996 and though I am originally from the Boston area I was living in Albany, NY. My sister and her husband came in for a visit from Redondo Beach, California. It was the middle of winter and very cold. They flew into Boston and drove to Albany. That first night we stayed in my apartment. It had to be no more than 5 degrees outside and windy! A series of unfortunate events began to unfold. Early in the evening the heat in my building broke, the electricity went out due to ice, we had a fire alarm and no hot water. Nothing seemed to be going right! We decided to bundle up and turn in for the evening. We had so many layers on we looked like stuffed animals! The next morning we got up early to head to Lake Placid where we had a reservation at the Mirror Lake Inn. We almost didn’t go because a big snow storm was forcasted for that day. But Kellie and Bill had their hearts set on it. So around 5am we headed out, after taking ice cold showers! The ride was uneventful until, just as we neared our exit,I saw the flashing lights behind us. Of course, it ws a NY State Trooper pulling me over for speeding. I tried to be nice, but this guy was in no mood for my charm. The minute he took my info and walked back to his cruiser, my brother-in-law said “Oh, he’s definitely writing you a ticket!” And that’s just what he did. We continued on. I remember the road being windy and beautiful. As we neared Lake Placid our moods started to change for the better. Then we came into town. I had been before but not Kellie and Bill. They fell in love with it immediately. We drove through the village and there it was…the Mirror Lake Inn up on the hill. We went in and were greeted by the nicest hotel staff I have ever encountered. After hearing about our past 24 hours they made us feel so warm and welcome. We felt a sense of total relief! We put our bags in our respective rooms and headed down for some breakfast. Feeling better, we headed off to ski at White Face. Kellie and Bill had a blast. Back at the Inn we changed and headed out to dinner. I can't remember the name of the restuarant but it was recommened by the Inn's staff and it was fantastic. And busy! Halfway through dinner there was a buzz in the room. The waiters were tapping diners on the shoulders and alerting them to the fact that "The snow is here"! By the time dinner was over the snow was really coming down. The Lake was covered and as we stood across the street and looked up at Mirror Lake Inn, we were happy and content. I rememeber the little things like the heated driveway , the heated floors in the bathroom. I remember the library we sat in and chatted with a glass of wine, catching up and enjoying our time together that was much too rare. We stayed another night and enjoyed more of the same. What started out as a disastrous weekend getaway, turned out to be picture perfect. Thanks to the Mirror Lake Inn. All the bad mishaps of the days leading up to our visit, now are somehow funny. All of us are back in the Boston area and my sister and her husband, now married 13 years, still talk about our stay there and speak with great anticipation of returning soon with our enire family. The kids will love it! Though our trip was short, we have so many wonderful and fun memories. Thank you to all at the Mirror Lake Inn for creating such memories for us. Your Inn truly are a gem. Warmest regards. Traci Klier
