| Mirror Lake Honeymoon By: Erin G. Naples, NY |
What serendipity!!
A few days ago, I was rooting around under our bed (probably rounding up dirty socks), when I came across the box containing our wedding and honeymoon photos. I also found the folder I had kept from our stay at the Mirror Lake Inn. Included are room service and spa menus, postcards, and the daily news and weather report.
Later that evening, I was feeling nostalgic. I decided to get on the internet and see if the Mirror Lake Inn has a web site. Of course you do!! Here's our memory of an amazing couple of days:
When my husband and I were planning our wedding, we were also saving to buy a house. We could not afford an extravagant reception or island honeymoon costing thousands of dollars. We live in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York and wanted to drive to our honeymoon destination while taking minimal time off work.
We learned about the Mirror Lake Inn in an Adirondack travel guide. The photographs were beautiful. We knew we had to begin our marriage there.
On April 12, 1997, my husband and I were married in the small chapel of our church. We said goodbye to our friends and family in the parking lot and headed for the mountains.
It rained on and off the entire day. The fog was so dense heading into the mountains, that we couldn't see more than a few feet around the car. The drive took hours! It was like being in a white out, but thankfully, we did not have to deal with the snow. When we finally arrived, the Inn took our breath away. It stood out in the fog, and warmly welcomed us.
We parked our car. What a relief! The tissue paper bells and roses our friends had attached to our car were completely plastered to it. We had a good laugh and left them there.
The lobby was amazing! The grandfather clock, the staircase, all of it...We checked into room 744, freshened up, and dressed for dinner. The candlelit dining room was gorgeous. Chef Matt Baldwin prepared our meals. Perfection seems an understatement. The service was outstanding.
It was the next morning before we understood why room 744 is called "The Whiteface Suite". Wow! The fog had lifted!! We devoured our Adirondak breakfast (thank you, room service!) and set out for the day.
We spent most of the day sight seeing and shopping in a very quiet Lake Placid. We had the hills, Olympic venues, the town to ourselves. We then grabbed a pizza and a six pack and retreated to our suite... Sometime late that evening we enjoyed the fresh fruit and cheese platter that had been left in our suite at check in. Again, perfection.
Jeff and I will celebrate our tenth anniversary on April 12. In 1998, we purchased our home. It is an 1850's farmhouse that we are slowly remodeling and updating. We also have to amazing sons, ages 5 and 2. They keep us very busy. They also keep us laughing!
We will never forget our short stay at the Mirror Lake Inn. Someday we hope to return. Perhaps we can splurge for some of the divine spa services that we missed on our honeymoon.
Until then, we have fond memories of young love, great food, lots of laughter, luxurious accommodations, and a mountain called Whiteface. Thanks! Sincerely, Erin Gentner
