Last winter, my boyfriend and I checked into Mirror Lake for an action filled vacation. We wanted to ski, skate, sled, watch the ski jumping, World Cup Snow Boarding, and snow shoe. We enjoyed all of that, but our best memory was playing checkers.
The wooden checker set and table, in the reading/game room, with a view of the snow capped mountains, the warmth of the large stone fireplace and the aroma from the View caught our senses. For kicks and giggles, we decided to play a game and quickly became addicted!
We stopped in and played a game before and after every meal, and when we came home from the slopes and our many adventures.
My boyfriend severely hurt himself while skiing and ended up hospitalized. I came back to the Inn, walked by the checker table and was overcome with sadness, because there was his empty chair and I had noone to play checkers with. The good news is he improved, was later discharged and we were forced to stay another day at Mirror Lake! Yahoo!
All we wanted to do, when we returned back to the Inn from the hospital was resume our checker tournament. He was unable to make it to the reading/game room. While he was sleeping, I ran downtown and purchased a plastic checker set, the only one I could find. I set the table in our room up against the window waited for him to wake up and we had our checker game complete with our beautifull view and snacked on a delicious cheese tray the Inn had sent and room service for dinner.
I will never forget, the one on one time my boyfriend and I had over checkers. We laughed, talked, and enjoyed time spent with each other. I can't tell you who won all the games, I think he might have, but sitting in the window of our room, having him alive when I feared he would die, laughing, talking and enjoying the Mirror Lake Inn and all of the warmth and kindness in it, is the best memory I have and will always consider it and the Mirror Lake Inn a winner. |
