1944 Memories

On September 2, 1944, I was a blushing bride, just married to Joseph Boland in Schenectady, NY. We drove from Schenectady to Lake Placid, a fete in those days as it took many hours.

We both worked at the GE plant and our friends at work and family took up a collection of gas ration coupons for our use. My father graciously loaned us his 1940 Pontiac for the trip. On arriving we could see the Inn, on a slight rise, looming in all its country charm welcoming us. Our room was not ready so we decided to have dinner, which was being served at that time. A young girl served rolls from a bun warmer as she walked from table to table. The dinners were one dollar and were delicious, as were all the meals.

The Inn was charming and cozy and had a large comfortable lobby. The grounds were beautiful with a sloping hill of grass down to the individual cabins and the lake.

In the few days we were there we visited many places such as Ausable Chasm, Saranac Inn, Lake Placid Club, Olympic arena and more. At the Olympic arena we saw an ice show. On the program were Barbara Ann Scott and Dick Buttons before they were stars, it was very entertaining.

On September 4th, after an evening of dancing at Hotel Marcy, we were rudely awakened by an earthquake which was very frightening. All the guests went down to the lobby in their night clothes to see what the situation was. A young man, evidently inebriated, ran into the lobby shouting, "All the water has gone from the lake", which only added to a very scary situation. We all calmed down after awhile and everything returned to normal.

My husband Jospeh passed 28 years ago, but I will always remember and cherish the memories of our honeymoon at Mirror Lake Inn. I have been back to Lake Placid a few times since and always make it a point to visit Mirror Lake Inn. My daughter and her husband spent their honeymoon at Mirror Lake Inn 40 years later.
